Arcadia, from the Santa Anita Park area north to the foothill tracts

Arcadia is our home town, and the calls here cover every kind of fireplace heat. Some are sealed direct-vent units that pull outside air through a two-layer pipe. Others are gas log sets sitting in an old brick firebox, venting up a flue sized for wood. Each one gets the same order of work. We clean and test the burner and pilot, check the gas connection for leaks, then follow the exhaust path to the cap. In the foothill tracts near Highland Oaks and Santa Anita Oaks, we also check how far the vent ends from windows and eaves. A gas fireplace that heats well but vents poorly is not finished, so we write up both.
Monrovia, foothill town with Old Town at its center and canyon streets to the north

Monrovia has houses near Old Town where the fireplace came well before any furnace. When one of those fireboxes now holds a gas log set, we check that the damper is clamped open and the flue is clear the whole way up. A brick flue built for wood smoke can be much larger than a gas burner needs, and an oversized flue may not draft well. Higher up the slope, the job is more often a factory-built gas fireplace with its own vent pipe. There we clean the burner, check the glass gasket and inspect the vent cap for damage. Every finding goes into a short written note.
Sierra Madre, the foothill village directly above Arcadia
Sierra Madre
Turning an older brick fireplace in Sierra Madre into a real heat source starts with the flue. A clay tile liner that has cracked or shifted cannot safely carry exhaust from a gas insert. We look at it with a camera before recommending anything. If the liner is sound, a gas log set may be enough for the owner. If the goal is more heat, an insert with a stainless liner run to the top is the usual path. Narrow fireboxes limit which inserts fit, so we measure the opening, the depth and the throat before any model is chosen. The written note lists what fits and why.
Temple City, along Las Tunas Drive between San Gabriel and El Monte

Temple City sits along Las Tunas Drive, a short drive south of Arcadia. On a one-story house with a single brick chimney, we check whether the flue still suits whatever burns in the firebox now. Gas logs in a wood flue need the damper locked open. On a newer two-story home with a sealed direct-vent fireplace, the work moves to the burner, the glass seal and the wall or roof termination outside. Some lots also have a rear unit with its own wall heater and vent. We look at that vent too, because exhaust from one appliance should never drift into another one's air intake.
El Monte, on the valley floor between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River
El Monte
El Monte lies on the flat floor of the San Gabriel Valley, between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River. Here the fireplace can be one of several heat sources on the same lot. A brick firebox may sit near a wall furnace or a floor unit, and a back house may run its own heater. Each appliance needs its own working vent. We trace every flue on the property, confirm none are shared without a proper connector, and look for rust or gaps at the roof. When a gas log set is in the fireplace, we check the damper clamp and the flame pattern. Our note lists each heater, where it vents, and what needs attention first.
San Marino, in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley west of Arcadia
San Marino
A house in San Marino may have more than one fireplace, and each one can burn a different fuel. One firebox might hold gas logs, another an insert, and a third might still burn wood. When one chimney carries several flues, we confirm which flue serves which fireplace before testing anything. A gas appliance vented into the wrong flue, or into one shared with a wood fire, can push exhaust back into a room. We test the draft at each opening with the unit running. Where an insert sits behind a stone or tile surround, we check the liner connection without disturbing the finish around it.
Pasadena, west of Arcadia along the foothills
Pasadena
Pasadena lies just west of Arcadia, and our work there runs from Old Town to Linda Vista and Bungalow Heaven. An older brick fireplace in the city can be converted to gas, but the flue has to match the new appliance. A clay tile liner sized for wood smoke may be too wide for an insert. Gas exhaust also carries moisture that wears at mortar joints over time. So before an insert goes in, we inspect the liner and size a stainless one to the unit when it is needed. For gas logs left in an open firebox, we confirm the damper clamp, the gas valve and the flame height, then write it all down.
Alhambra, on the west side of the San Gabriel Valley

Alhambra is on the west side of the San Gabriel Valley. When an older brick firebox here holds a gas log set, we check the damper clamp, the valve and the flame. We also look up the clay flue for cracks and debris. If the home has a wall heater, we trace its vent on its own, since two heaters should not share one path out of the house.
Altadena, the unincorporated foothill community north of Pasadena

Altadena is unincorporated and sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Since the January 2025 Eaton Fire, the heating work here falls into two kinds. Some owners want an older brick fireplace checked before it warms a room again. Others have a new home with a factory-built gas fireplace, and we confirm the vent and cap went in the way the maker specifies.
Glendale, below the Verdugo Mountains

Glendale runs from the flats near Atwater Village up into the Verdugo Mountains. We service gas log sets in older brick fireboxes and direct-vent inserts in newer rooms. For each one, we confirm how the unit gets its combustion air and where the exhaust leaves. On hillside homes we also check that the vent ends a safe distance from decks and windows.
Highland Park, along the Arroyo Seco in Northeast Los Angeles

Highland Park sits along the Arroyo Seco in Northeast Los Angeles, and much of it falls inside a historic preservation overlay. In an older house here, a furnace or wall heater vent can run beside a brick flue that was never lined. We trace each vent to the roof and check that none tie into the fireplace flue. Exterior chimney work is planned to keep the original brick in view.
La Canada Flintridge, in the foothills west of Pasadena
La Canada Flintridge
On a sloped lot in La Canada Flintridge, a chimney can rise well above the roof on the downhill side. A tall flue drafts hard, which can pull heat out of the room when gas logs run with the damper wide open. We look at flue height, damper setting and insert options together. Then we note which change would keep more of the heat inside the house.

Los Angeles holds every kind of fireplace, from old brick fireboxes to sealed gas units in newer buildings. We take calls in Downtown LA, Echo Park, Silver Lake and Los Feliz. On each visit we identify the fuel, the vent type and where the vent ends, then test the unit while it runs. Where a gas appliance vents into an old masonry flue, we check that the flue suits it.
Montrose, the small foothill hub of the Crescenta Valley

Montrose is a small community in the Crescenta Valley, centered on its walkable shopping park. When an owner here wants more heat from an older brick fireplace, we start by inspecting the flue. An insert with a sized stainless liner heats a room far better than open gas logs do. If the logs stay, we set the flame and confirm the damper clamp holds.
